Brief History
Before Qing Dynasty, there were few Plains Aborigines (Papora) in here.
On the latter years of Emperor Kang Xi’s reign, the early immigrants from Anxi, Jinjiang and Nanan of Quanzhou,Fujian settled here. They set up stores and warehouses in order to do business. The trade with Fujian began.
In Daoguang years (1820-1850) , Wuqi became one of the most important ports in central Taiwan. In that time, Wuqi was called Aoxi, administered by Chungpao, Dadu, meaning that this place Is located in the west of Ao feng mountain. In 1891,this place was renamed Wuqi.
During Japanese occupation era, Wuqi and Aomuliao of Shalu was renamed Wuci Port Street, Tachia County in 1920, due to the re-division of administrative areas.
After Taiwan restoration (1945), this place was called "Wuqi Township". In 2010, Taichung county has merged with Taichung city, so this town was upgraded to District.
